Drug Topics has identified four sectors that we expect will continue to dominate and change pharmacy in 2019. They are mergers and acquisitions, automation, telepharmacy, and drug prices.

The pharmacy automation sector continues to grow and pharmacies are looking for innovative technologies to help them fill more prescriptions, maximize pharmacy efficiency and deliver top-notch service without adding additional staff.

The article states that the Forecast of Global Pharmacy Automation Market 2023 report projects that pharmacy automation revenue will grow an average 10.9% each year, reaching $17 billion by 2023, up from $9.14 billion in 2017. The United States is the largest consumer of pharmacy automation, accounting for 46% of global consumption in 2015.

Asteres’ ScriptCenter kiosk and locker is an example of pharmacy technology that allows pharmacies to fill and verify prescriptions in the pharmacy, but deliver them to patients in another location. By increasing pharmacy pickup locations without building pharmacies or hiring additional staff, pharmacies are able to grow business while keeping costs down.

With Amazon’s acquisition of PillPack in 2018, it’s only a matter of time before people get their prescriptions from Amazon. “They [the pharmacy chains] know that once they’ve lost the customer, they’re probably not going to get them back. It’s a lot less expensive to retain customers than to attract them.”

Pharmacies in 2019 are having to think outside the box with various technologies such as ScriptCenter to grow their prescription business while cutting costs and keeping their customers happy.
